The Nanaimo Child Development Centre is a community-based, non profit organization that has been an integral part of the community since 1967. The Child Development Centre has a mandate to provide individualized services for children, from birth to age 19, and their families that promote optimum child development.

Occupational Therapy Services


The pediatric Occupational Therapists at the Child Development Centre are part of a team of people available to help you with concerns about your child. The Occupational Therapist brings to the team knowledge of self-care, productivity play. The Occupational Therapist has a special interest in your child's self-help skills.

Are you concerned about your child's development?
  1. Self Care - Does you child have difficulty in self-help skills such as feeding, toileting, dressing and mobility?
  2. Productivity - Does your child have difficulty with skills such as cutting with scissors, manipulating objects and learning new information?
  3. Play - Does your child have difficulty with play skills such as using toys appropriately, interacting with others or displaying problem behaviors?
How does the Occupational Therapist work with your child?
  1. Self-Care - Occupational Therapists can assist in choosing appropriate equipment such as adapted feeding utensils, wheelchairs, and fabrication of specialized splints.
  2. Productivity- Occupational Therapists can assist with adapting activities. Home and school programs can be specifically tailored and modified to enable you to work on specific goals with your child such as memory, problem solving and coordination activities.
  3. Play - Occupational Therapists can assist by providing behavioral strategies for your child, promoting cooperative play skills and appropriate toy use.
